We've all been there: too reliant on caffeine, struggling to get through the morning.

While a good cup of coffee can go a long way to get things moving, over time, caffeine becomes less and less effective. If you've become a little too reliant on your morning cup of joe, you may want to try adding something new to your routine.

This is where the Blue Morning Pick-Me-Up swoops in to jazz up your mornings.

For many people, eating breakfast can be tough. Whether you're in too much of a hurry to whip up a complete breakfast while you're rushing around in the morning, or you simply don't have the appetite for fruit and eggs as soon as you wake up, it's still important to give your body some fuel to help you get through the morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

The Blue Morning Pick-Me-Up can give you the influx of nutrients that you need to stay focused and energized through your morning, without weighing you down or taking up more than a few moments of your time.

Now, let's take a look at each of the nutrient powerhouses that will help fuel you from task to task, all while providing your body with the detoxification support that it needs to keep your digestive system running smoothly.

Blue Morning Pick-Me-Up Ingredient Benefits

cucumbers, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, kale

Cucumber — After a long night's sleep, it's important to get hydrated in order to get your digestive system moving, provide energy, and support your body's natural detoxification processes. If you're not interested in chugging water first thing in the morning, cucumber juice can go a long way in restoring the hydration naturally lost overnight.

Cucumber juice also adds some serious bulk to this fruit-loaded recipe. Cucumbers are also packed with nutrients, including antioxidants, beta carotene, and manganese. If your typical diet leaves something to be desired when it comes to nutrients, it's a smart move to sneak some extra nutrition into your morning juice.

Spinach — Ready to get even more antioxidants? The spinach in this recipe has you covered. You won't get a ton of output when you put spinach into your juicer, but don't worry — a little goes a long way. Spinach juice is loaded with antioxidants, and research has shown that spinach has been tied to the prevention of oxidative stress, aiding the body's natural detoxification process. Spinach also may help to decrease the growth of cancer cells. More research needs to be done, but early studies are promising.

Blueberries — Partially responsible for the gorgeous hue of this recipe, blueberries are loaded with vitamin C, potassium, phytoflavinoids, and antioxidants. These perfect little bursts of flavor are also anti-inflammatory, which can help to decrease any morning puffiness. If fresh blueberries aren't in season in your area, good news — frozen blueberries are just as nutrient-packed as their fresh counterparts. When using frozen blueberries for juicing, allow them to thaw in a cup overnight so that you get maximum yield in your juicer.

Blackberries — When it comes to detoxing, blackberries wear many hats. As prebiotics, blackberries can improve gut health by feeding the good bacteria in the gut. A healthy gut is linked to anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting effects, and it's smart to feed your body's good bacteria as often as possible. Blackberries don't just cut inflammation in the digestive system — they've also been shown to reduce inflammation in the brain. This may work to help protect the brain from a decline in cognitive abilities over time.

While cucumber is already working to cut the sugar in this juice, blackberries get some credit as well, as they have a low glycemic index. This means that they're unlikely to spike blood sugar levels, further decreasing the likelihood that you'll experience a crash later in the morning.

Red grapes — You know about the health benefits of red wine, so it makes sense that going straight to the source — fresh red grapes — can provide you with a myriad of health benefits as well. When it comes to nutrition, red grapes come out on top when compared to other types of grapes. The powerful antioxidant resveratrol is found in red wine, and nutrition researchers believe that red grape juice is a good source as well.

Just like blackberries, red grapes have a low glycemic index as well, making them a solid choice for people who live with diabetes. Red grapes can also contribute to healthy cardiac function. Polyphenols, an antioxidant found in red grapes, is an anti-inflammatory that can also relax the blood vessels, improving heart health.

Now, let's take a look at how simple it is to start your morning off with a Blue Morning Pick-Me-Up.

Servings 1

Equipment

  • Juicer

Ingredients

  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1 cup Spinach
  • 1 cup Blueberries
  • ½ cup Blackberries
  • ½ cup Red Grapes

Instructions

  • Add cucumber to juicer on high speed, switch to low speed, add remaining ingredients. It's normal for the juice to separate — the green juice typically forms a top layer, with the vibrant blue/purple juice settling in the bottom. Feel free to stir, or simply drink as is.
For maximum nutritional benefit, drink immediately. If necessary, juice can be stored in a covered container in the fridge for up to 48 hours.
