It's burger night! Forget about visiting your favorite fast-food chain. Even that classic pub burger you've been drooling about all day won't match this masterpiece. It's time to make a beef Worcestershire burger which will send your taste buds into overdrive.

The secret burger ingredient

This recipe makes a basic burger - simple yet delicious; filled with cheese, bacon, and lettuce. But it’s the secret ingredient that takes this hamburger from good to great. And that ingredient is… Worcestershire sauce! A solid weapon in your cooking arsenal; the mix of salt, sweet, and tang in one sauce is a marriage made in heaven when combined with ground beef. One of the main components of Worcestershire sauce is anchovy. Don’t let this put you off as the fishy notes won’t come through in the burger. Instead, as you take a bite, you’ll be greeted with a hit of umami – that hard to describe savoury, meaty flavor which results in deliciousness overload.

Fast Fact

Sometimes we're short on time or simply don't have the energy to make burger patties. If that's how you're feeling, check out our review of the best frozen burger patties. In this review, you'll find our four favorite brands that taste (almost) as good as a homemade patty. Go ahead: free up some extra time to put your feet up!

If you’re still keen to make your own, which I'm sure you are, let’s dive in.

Tips to make a better burger

  1. Shredding the lettuce helps to soak up the sauces and tastes delicious.
  2. Iceberg has a high water content so opt for an alternative like Romaine which also has more flavor.
  3. Feel free to add a mix of cheese, maybe cheddar and cotija cheese? There are no wrong answers.
  4. Use 80/20 ground chuck for the burger for the ultimate in meaty goodness.
  5. Feeling motivated? Consider grinding your own meat.
  6. Use a high heat when cooking the patty and flip it only once (yes, this is a controversial topic).
  7. Use a digital scale to ensure every patty is the same weight and cooks at the same rate.
  8. Use a thermometer to get the meat cooked to perfection without any guess work.
  9. Avoid the urge to push down on the patty, with a spatula, while cooking as it releases the juices.
